Finding Your Voice

As I begin to plan my classes for this week, the house is very quiet and in the early morning I hear the sweet, uncomplicated sound of bird song.

The sweetness and purity of this sound has me thinking about the Vishuddha chakra, or “throat Chakra”. Vishuddha Chakra is about how we express ourselves and how we communicate with others. It is the seat of our truth telling. It is generally associated with speech, and with being understood, but even more essentially, is concerned with all communication. How we listen, how we hear. And, it is a bridge from the more basic, human needs that define the lower chakras, to the more elevated, “spiritual” chakras of third eye and crown. It is the place where we align our deep self and values with how we live and express that self.
We’re told that when we work with this chakra, we draw in the support of Anahata (heart), and we’re able to communicate what is essential, loving, and full of truth.

When your Vishuddha is underactive, you hold back and are afraid to fully express yourself. When your Vishuddha is overactive, you tend to dominate in conversations and typically are unwilling to listen. Speaking with no filter, you might find yourself quick to act but without much consideration or compassion.

Sometimes the deepest communication is intent listening.

In this week’s classes I hope to visit, through yoga poses and sequences, the many ways we can create more openness, freedom and integration in our throat chakra. How do we soften the throat and heart through asanas that stretch the front of the throat, as well as asanas that gently draw the chin in, a gesture of self-reflection? How do we stay conscious of what we are putting out there in the world so our communication doesn’t do harm?  How do we listen more deeply to what is being communicated to us?
