Exploring Hindu Mythology: Ganesha the Gatekeeper At the beginning of every beginning there is Ganesha, the elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvati. Remover of obstacles, Ganesha opens the gateways of deeper awareness and takes us to the very core of our being. As a true jivan mukti (an enlightened being in embodied form), Ganesha becomes an empowering vision of the Self, an expression of our deepest human aspirations, and a way to see and to be seen as the Light of Consciousness that has chosen our mortal form. Please join us for a morning of asana, meditation and stories of Ganesha to explore and celebrate our own embodied form. |

Deepening the Spiritual Work of Yoga $45 for both sessions, or $25 for one session An introduction to the Classical Ashtanga yoga practice. Emphasis will be placed on the “eight limbs” (asht’-anga) of the traditional spiritual practice. Asana (posture) is the third limb and will be practiced along with discussion of the other limbs and how to practice them. This workshop is one part lecture, two parts practice. In addition, we will learn the Sanskrit invocation to yoga practice, the powerful breathing practice known as ujjayi pranayama, the energetic locks known as bandha, and the meaning of Om. Come prepared to sit, to breathe, and to work. Part I: Yama–Pranayama, Sunday, October 11, 10:00–12:30 This workshop is recommended for anyone wishing to gain a better understanding of how to develop a spiritual practice through yoga. The spiritual foundation applies to all schools of hatha yoga. No previous experience is necessary, though please note that the work in posture in the Ashtanga Vinyasa tradition is rigorous. Katie Friedland is a practitioner of Ashtanga yoga and has been teaching at Dartmouth College for 10 years. Influenced by the ancient texts of yoga, the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali and the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Katie has woven the spiritual path of yoga into her Ashtanga Yoga Primary and Secondary series classes at Dartmouth. She has taught instructor training courses on the art of mindful assistance and has trained Dartmouth apprentice yoga istructors who have gone on to establish their own teaching careers. She has studied extensively with Beryl Bender Birch of the Hard and the Soft Yoga Institute and Kathy McNames of YogaVermont as well as with many others of differing yoga lineages. She can be reached at katie.friedland@dartmouth.edu. |

Blissful Calm: Restorative Yoga and Pranayama Friday, June 12, 5:30-7:30 pm Leslie Carleton Restorative poses are “active relaxation.” Supporting the body with props, we will relax the body to bring it into balance. These postures relieve stress and tone the organs, and in this class will also help prepare the body for pranayama. Prana is breath, spirit, life force, energy. Pranayama, the fourth limb of the eight limbs of yoga, is the practice of controlling and expanding the breath, increasing vigor and perception. Pranayama calms the nervous system and frees the mind from the restrictions of the body. You'll leave feeling both relaxed and energized. |

Introduction to Thai Yoga Bodywork/Passive Partner Yoga Sunday May 31, 2:30-4:15 pm Michal Woll Although known as Thailand’s most popular export, the practice of Thai massage, also called Thai Yoga Bodywork (TYB), has roots in India, the ancient home of yoga and Ayurveda. The experience is a lovely integration of Eastern massage similar to Shiatsu, combining the application of pressure along sen or energy lines and manual manipulation into positions that stretch muscles and joints and provide deeper and more thorough treatment along the sen. Like yoga and Shiatsu, this meditative practice is performed on a soft mat on the floor, with both practitioner and recipient wearing comfortable loose clothing. The practitioner is simultaneously doing his/her own movement “dance” including active yoga postures. Michal Woll discovered yoga in 1988 and began teaching in 1999. A student of many teachers with diverse styles of yoga, she has been most strongly influenced by the work of Eric Schiffman and John Friend, both of whom integrate the physical and spiritual realms and encourage organic personal expression. She says: “For me, yoga is both a mode of discovery as well as a metaphor for life.” Michal was introduced to Thai Massage on an overseas trip in 1998 and began her practice soon thereafter, immediately realizing that it was the perfect fusion of her background in yoga and her training as a physical therapist. She is also certified in mat Pilates. When not in the studio, Michal works as a licensed PT doing home care and as an ordained rabbi. |
