Although known as Thailand’s most popular export, the practice of Thai massage, also called Thai Yoga Bodywork (TYB), has roots in India, the ancient home of yoga and Ayurveda. The experience is a lovely integration of Eastern massage similar to Shiatsu, combining the application of pressure along sen or energy lines and manual manipulation into positions that stretch muscles and joints and provide deeper and more thorough treatment along the sen. Like yoga and Shiatsu, this meditative practice is performed on a soft mat on the floor, with both practitioner and recipient wearing comfortable loose clothing. The practitioner is simultaneously doing his/her own movement “dance” including active yoga postures.
This 2 part workshop will provide a basic introduction to, and demonstration of, the concepts and techniques of TYB.  Each session will begin with a short meditation and yoga warm up.  The first week you will learn and practice passive partner yoga, taken from the classic TYB flow. Week two will review and build on the techniques from week 1 and also include palming and thumb pressure techniques along the sen.  In addition to giving and receiving wonderful energy and stretch, each participant will learn how to use good yoga form, assuring safety and impact for both partners.

Come alone or with a friend.  We will trade partners and experience working with different bodies and personalities.  Expect to leave this workshop grounded and energized!

Michal Woll discovered yoga in 1988 and began teaching in 1999.  A student of many teachers with diverse styles of yoga, she has been most strongly influenced by the work of Eric Schiffman and John Friend, both of whom integrate the physical and spiritual realms and encourage organic personal expression. She says: “For me, yoga is both a mode of discovery as well as a metaphor for life.”  Michal was introduced to Thai Massage on an overseas trip in 1998 and began her practice soon thereafter, immediately realizing that it was the perfect fusion of her background in yoga and her training as a physical therapist.   She is also certified in mat Pilates.  When not in the studio, Michal works as a licensed PT doing home care and as an ordained rabbi.
